FILM SCORING

explore new soundscapes and scores composed by Matthew Lee

Maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

I use the Nucleus Orchestral Core, Cereberus percussion ensemble, and Spitfire Labs virtual software instruments to compose exciting, epic, and somber scores on Logic Pro X and Sibelius. Despite lacking an education in traditional music theory, I aim to catalyze the emotions of the film for the audience through simple themes and harmonies that are emotionally provocative. My goal with my music is to highlight the unrestricted child-like exploration and creativity of composition.

The Ocean Maker Rescore

Marvin Hamlisch Film Scoring Competition

I scored the film Oceanmaker for the 2024 Marvin Hamlisch Film Scoring Competition this past June. To accompany this short animated action film, I developed an epic orchestral score. I drew inspiration from the action tracks of Hans Zimmer and themes composed by Michael Giacchino, incorporating emphatic and busy percussion lines and repeating piano motifs throughout the film.

SHIFT Rescore

Indie Film Music Scoring Competition

I scored the short indie film SHIFT for the 2024 Indie Film Music Competition this past June. This 3-minute film provides a glimpse into the life of a nurse living in her car to isolate in order to care for patients during the Covid-19 pandemic. She is kept from her family as she attempts to mask the pain of isolation from her son. Accompanying this film, I developed a melancholic score that balances both comfort and loneliness by using a childish and simple piano theme inspired by Michael Giacchino’s score from Up.
